Clinical Bioinformatician: What Do I Need to Know When Working in Clinical Molecular Diagnostics?

Annette Leon, Ph.D., Hematogenix Laboratories

Somak Roy, M.D., Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center

Bioinformatics has become an integral component of clinical molecular diagnostics, yet many bioinformaticians gain their first experience in CLIA-certified molecular laboratories after starting their careers. At the same time, laboratory directors are tasked with defining job roles and identifying the training needed to help bioinformaticians transition into the highly regulated world of patient care. The role of a clinical bioinformatician can vary significantly across laboratories, depending on team size, expertise, and organizational needs. In this session, we will discuss AMP guidance in the roles, skill sets, and responsibilities of the clinical bioinformaticians working in a CLIA-certified molecular laboratory.

After attending this presentation, participants should be able to:
• Explore the key challenges in defining and establishing the role of the clinical bioinformatician in clinical laboratories.
•. Discuss AMP guidance about the knowledge base and resources for clinical bioinformaticians working in CLIA-certified laboratories.
