Preparing for "The Next Big Thing": Lab Preparedness in Uncertain Times

Charles Hill, M.D., Ph.D., Emory University School of Medicine

In these difficult times, it is easy to overlook our roles in preparing for the next pandemic or revolutionary biomarker. We will discuss the opportunities, challenges and strategies associated with being as prepared as possible for whatever may come.

After attending this presentation, participants should be able to:
• Analyze opportunities to prepare for pandemics and new biomarkers.
• Describe strategies for managing real-time crises.

Dollars and Sense

Annette Kim, M.D., Ph.D., University of Michigan School of Medicine

This presentation will cover simple point-of-care or plug-and-play methods in molecular diagnostics that can provide adequate and timely care of patients in resource-limited settings. It will reference the WHO Essential Medicines and Essential Diagnostics Lists and discuss non-NGS methods to address these minimum and more broad molecular needs in germline disease and oncology indications. In addition, thoughts on how to maximize available platforms and use of testing algorithms for efficient testing practices will be shared.

After attending this presentation, participants should be able to:
• Compare different point-of-care or plug-and-play methods.
• Appraise these methods for their utility and ease of implementation in different levels of resource-limited settings.
