Applications of DNA Methylation-based Tumor Classification for Precision Diagnostics

Helge Lubenow, Heidelberg Epignostix GmbH

Diagnostic AI models based on the methylation status of tumor samples classify cancer types precisely and objectively. We describe classification of central nervous system, soft tissue and bone tumors using a machine learning classifier algorithm based on array-generated DNA methylation data demonstrating the potential for optimized patient treatment in line with WHO guidelines.

After attending this presentation, participants should be able to:
• Discuss the application of methylation-based tumor classification in a morphologically heterogeneous class of tumors where some entities lack defining histopathological features and therefore diagnosis is burdened with a high inter-observer variability and misclassification rate.
• Interpret the result of a machine learning classifier algorithm based on array-generated DNA methylation data.
